What is Percentage?
A percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100. The word "percent" comes from the Latin per centum, meaning "by the hundred." Percentages are used everywhere — from calculating discounts and tax to tracking exam scores and profit margins. When you say "25%", it simply means 25 out of 100.
How to Calculate Percentage — Formulas Explained
1. Percentage of a Number
To find X% of Y, multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100.
Example: 10% of 500 = (10 × 500) ÷ 100 = 50
2. Percentage Increase or Decrease
To find how much a value has increased or decreased in percentage terms.
Example: Price increased from ₹100 to ₹120. Change = ((120 − 100) ÷ 100) × 100 = +20%
3. Percentage Difference
To find the relative difference between two values, neither of which is the reference point.
Example: Values 80 and 120. Difference = |80 − 120| ÷ ((80 + 120) ÷ 2) × 100 = 40 ÷ 100 × 100 = 40%
