How to Calculate GST in India — Complete Guide 2025–26
A beginner-friendly guide to GST calculation in India. Covers CGST, SGST, IGST, rate slabs, formulas, step-by-step examples, and common mistakes — everything you need to calculate GST correctly.
What is it?
GST calculation is the process of working out how much Goods and Services Tax applies on a transaction — split into the right components and applied at the correct rate.
Why it matters
Incorrect GST calculation leads to wrong invoices, ITC mismatches, GST return errors, and potential penalties from the tax authority.
Types of GST
India has four types: CGST and SGST for intra-state, IGST for inter-state, and UTGST for supplies within Union Territories.
Who needs this?
Every GST-registered business, freelancer, trader, and accountant who raises invoices or files GST returns needs to calculate GST accurately.
What is GST Calculation?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a unified indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. Introduced on 1 July 2017, it replaced a web of earlier taxes including VAT, Service Tax, and Excise Duty with a single, structured system.
GST calculation refers to the process of determining how much tax is applicable on a given transaction, which component of GST applies (CGST/SGST or IGST), and what the final invoice amount should be after adding the tax.
The calculation depends on three key factors: the taxable value of the supply, the applicable GST rate based on the HSN or SAC code, and whether the transaction is intra-state or inter-state.
Getting this right matters for every invoice you raise. If you charge the wrong rate, your buyer may not be able to claim the correct ITC, and you may face discrepancies in your GSTR-1 filing. Use our free GST calculator to eliminate guesswork entirely.
Types of GST in India
The type of GST you charge depends on where your buyer is located relative to your business.
GST Rate Slabs in India
India has five primary GST rate slabs. The rate applicable to your product or service is determined by its HSN or SAC code. See our HSN Code Guide to find the right code.

GST Calculation Formula
There are two scenarios: when your price does not include GST (exclusive), and when it does (inclusive).
GST Exclusive (Add GST to Price)
Use this when your listed price does not include GST and you want to add it on top.
GST Inclusive (Extract GST from Price)
Use this when your listed price already includes GST and you need to back-calculate.
Splitting GST into Components
Intra-state (same state):
Inter-state (different states):
Practical GST Calculation Examples
Real-world step-by-step examples covering the most common business scenarios.
Product Billing (Intra-state)
A shopkeeper in Mumbai sells a mobile phone worth ₹15,000 to a customer in Mumbai. GST rate: 12%.
Service Invoice (Intra-state)
A freelancer in Bengaluru provides IT services worth ₹50,000 to a client in Bengaluru. GST rate: 18%.
Inter-state Transaction
A manufacturer in Pune sells machinery worth ₹2,00,000 to a factory in Hyderabad. GST rate: 18%.
GST Inclusive Price Breakdown
A product is sold at ₹11,800 inclusive of 18% GST. What is the original price and GST amount?
How to Calculate CGST, SGST & IGST
The split between these taxes is automatic once you know the transaction type. Here is how it works in practice.
Step 1: Identify the transaction type
Check whether the supplier and buyer are in the same state (intra-state) or different states (inter-state). This single fact determines whether you use CGST+SGST or IGST.
Step 2: Find the applicable GST rate
Look up the HSN code for your product or SAC code for your service. The rate is fixed by the GST Council for each code. Common rates are 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%.
Step 3: Apply the formula
Intra-state: CGST = Taxable Value × (Rate/2)%. SGST = Taxable Value × (Rate/2)%. Inter-state: IGST = Taxable Value × Rate%. Both approaches give the same total tax — only the distribution changes.
Step 4: Show on invoice separately
Your GST invoice must show CGST and SGST as separate line items for intra-state, or IGST as a single line item for inter-state. Never show CGST+SGST and IGST together on the same invoice.
GST Inclusive vs GST Exclusive Price
Confusing these two is one of the most frequent errors in GST invoicing. Here is a clear comparison.
GST Exclusive
The price shown does NOT include GST. Tax is added separately when billing. Commonly used in B2B invoices.
GST Inclusive
The price shown already includes GST. Tax must be back-calculated to show on the invoice. Common in B2C retail.
Common GST Calculation Mistakes
These errors show up frequently in GST returns and can trigger notices or ITC rejections.
Applying CGST+SGST for Inter-state Sales
One of the most common errors. For any supply crossing state borders, only IGST applies — never CGST+SGST. Applying the wrong combination causes GST return mismatches and ITC issues for your buyer.
Using Inclusive Price as Taxable Value
If your price already includes GST, you cannot apply GST again on top of it. The taxable value is the price before GST. Always separate out GST before calculating further.
Wrong GST Rate for the HSN Code
Every product or service has a specific GST rate tied to its HSN or SAC code. Using a generic rate without checking the correct HSN can result in undercharging or overcharging GST.
Rounding Errors on Tax
Manual calculation often results in rounding differences between CGST and SGST. Use a GST calculator or invoicing software to ensure paise-level accuracy and consistent totals.
Forgetting Cess on Some Items
Certain goods like tobacco, luxury cars, and aerated drinks attract an additional GST Compensation Cess on top of the 28% rate. This cess is often overlooked in manual calculations.
Not Updating for Rate Changes
GST Council periodically revises rates. A rate that was 12% last year may now be 5% or 18%. Always verify the current applicable rate before raising an invoice.
